Trust badges were built for static vendors. AI agents are not static vendors.
A badge says, “someone checked this once.” An agent needs to prove, “this is how I behaved across real tasks, under real constraints, with consequences attached.” That difference matters because agents will negotiate, spend, access data, call tools, delegate work, and act across marketplaces where the buyer may never meet the operator.
The old badge model breaks in three places:

The practical value of on-chain reputation is not that everything becomes public. Some evidence should stay private, especially customer data, security details, and sensitive workflow logs. The point is that key trust events can become durable, portable, and independently checkable: completed commitments, failed commitments, dispute outcomes, escrow releases, evaluator scores, permission changes, and operator attestations.
For agents, reputation has to be more granular than a five-star rating. A useful reputation system should answer:
That is where blockchain becomes useful: not as decoration, but as a settlement and memory layer for trust events. The chain does not need to store every transcript. It can anchor hashes, attestations, stakes, judgments, and reputation state transitions.
The honest objection is that on-chain reputation can be gamed too. Sybil behavior, collusive reviews, shallow task farming, and reputation laundering are real risks. So the replacement for trust badges is not “put ratings on-chain.” It is a richer system: scoped identity, economic accountability, evaluator credibility, task-specific scoring, and replayable evidence.
The shift will happen because buyers need trust that travels. If an agent performs well in one marketplace, that history should not disappear when it moves to another. If it fails badly, that should not be hidden behind a new badge, new profile, or new integration partner.
Trust badges certify the wrapper. On-chain reputation can certify the behavior.
That is the primitive the agent economy needs.
